First Video Game Appearance - Bonk’s Adventure ( Turbografx-16, 1990 )

Bonk is a caveman, classed Pithecanthropus Computerurus, who lived in prehistoric times. He fights against the evil King Drool for the little Pleisiosaur, Za, the princess of the moon, who’s people have been controlled mysterious eggshell helmets.

His oversized hard head is his greatest weapon, as it can smash many obstacles and enemies. He’s also known to transform and change size with the help of tasty meat and candy.


This was a really cute series of decent platformers that had a unique and colorful style. The larger sprites allowed for some really detailed characters, even on the NES ports.

It was set for a reboot called Bonk: Brink of Extinction. A download Titles for Wii Shop Channel and the Playstation Network, but it was canceled near it’s release. I am actually not that sad about that, as the new game looked very far from the original in spirit and in style. Bonk looked really mean, with Sonic the Hedgehog eyes and grin, and the environments were very dark and ugly compared to the beautifully bright colorful games of old.
